What is Artificial Intelligence and how do we use it?
AI or Artificial Intelligence refers to the simulation of human-like intelligence. To make machines behaving like humans, understand and react like humans is done with the help of AI.
In the last blog, you read about the development of digital computers in the 1940s, and how they completed complex tasks like mathematical theorems based on programming. Despite continuous advancement in the IT world, no technology matched human intelligence. On the other hand, some programs have achieved the presentation levels of human specialists, and are been used as AI for applications in places like medical diagnoses and finger and face recognition systems.
What Intelligence are we talking about over here?
Intelligence is ascribed as human behavior, more likely what will a human do in such situations. AI researchers have been focusing on some components like learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and using language to get a nearer experience to human intelligence.
Learning
There are different types of learning in artificial intelligence. For example, if we design a simple program where the computer decides which route is the smallest one from point A to B by comparing all possible routes. When the shortest route is found it memorizes it. Now the real use comes when the user asks for the shortest route and the program answers immediately. This technique of memorizing mistakes or the wrong options has already defaulted in humans and so it can be designed in computers using Artificial Intelligence.
Reasoning
The reasoning is a crucial part of this process, the computer conforms to a statement only when there is evidence to it or a reason to it. For example, the program knows Alex is a human. The program has also confirmed that all humans breathe. So here the program automatically decides that Alex can breathe.
Problem Solving
Problem-solving is known as reaching the desired goal or finding a solution to a given situation. Humans can easily solve problems based on what they have learned. For example, if we tell a human to pick a specific book from the library he can understand and easily bring the desired book, goal achieved. When a robot is ordered to do so there will be a lot of questions like which library it should go to. In the library, there may be the same book available at a different price so the robot won’t understand here but humans will buy the cheapest book available. Here comes AI, with past experiences the robot will go to the nearest library and after checking what amount it can spend, it will buy that book specifically and then bring the desired book.
Perception
Perception in AI is the process of interpreting vision, sounds, smells, and touch. In the 1970s, FREDDY a robot made by researchers at the Department of Artificial Intelligence (AI), University of Edinburgh was the world’s first thinking robot made using AI. Freddy was designed to perform a few tasks in a similar way to a five-year-old child. But the development team found they had underestimated how intelligent a five-year-old child could be.
One task that they taught Freddy was to put scattered pieces into a box, but the robot did the job too well and tried to tidy the box away too.
Where do we use Artificial Intelligence?
So, AI is of two types:
· Software; used in virtual assistants, image analysis software, search engines, speech and face recognition systems
· “Embodied” AI; used in robots, autonomous cars, drones, Internet of Things
Applications:
We have heard a lot about SIRI, ALEXA & many more, we even might have used them in our day-to-day life. Their functioning was only possible by Artificial Intelligence. They trying to replace secretaries and personal assistants that performed tasks like reading text, finding phone numbers, emailing, placing calls, and many other tasks done by assistants. Doing this job requires human intelligence like attending calls when the person is busy. This is how AI was introduced here. AI voice assistants are provided with a vast amount of data, sophisticated algorithms are used for AI programming to learn from data input which is constantly improved by predicting the end user’s needs. It can add tasks to the calendar, or place a call too. One advantage of this technology is that it is very fast and correct. There are no human errors like they forget to perform a task.
GPS technology, used by almost everyone to locate or reach a destination. It has made situations easier which was only possible by Artificial Intelligence. The technology uses a combination of Convolutional Neural Network and Graph Neural Network, which makes lives easier for users by automatically detecting the number of lanes and road types behind obstructions on the roads.
Did you know that companies use intelligent software to ease the hiring process?
Artificial Intelligence helps with blind hiring. Using machine learning software, you can examine applications based on specific parameters. AI drive systems can scan job candidates’ profiles, and resumes to provide recruiters an understanding of the talent pool they must choose from.
This is not the end, just the start of AI. It has changed and made our lives easier and the future usage of AI will be mesmerizing for sure!
